I taught secondary English for nine years, the last four as a head of year, before going independent in 2023. I left because the part of the job that actually moved students — sitting with one of them and working out what they had misunderstood — was the part there was never time for.
I mark for two boards each summer. It is unglamorous work and it is the single most useful thing I do, because it means I have read several hundred scripts at the grade boundary and I know what separates them.
I keep twelve students. That is not scarcity marketing; it is the number I can prepare properly for.
